The challenge

The Northern Territory (NT) Government approached CCE for professional development training in Understanding and Treating Hoarding Disorder. Hoarding is a psychological disorder that affects an estimated 2.5 per cent of Australians, and is particularly prevalent in the Northern Territory. The NT Government required the training for their allied health professionals across multiple departments, including mental health, aged care, rehabilitation and the Cancer Care Centre. They had been unable to source any locally based courses

Our solution

CCE, in collaboration with our facilitator Dr. Jessamine Chen, delivered its Understanding and Treating Hoarding Disorder course via Zoom to staff in Darwin and Alice Springs. The course explores Hoarding Disorder from various perspectives, including diagnosis, etiology and cognitive behavioural therapy for the condition. The group was introduced to assessment tools and interventions to use in their daily work practice, and best-practice frameworks to help deliver their services.

The outcome

Through a mix of activities including small group work, discussion and role play, the group attained a deeper awareness of this under-recognised yet socially damaging health problem. Being a registered Clinical Psychologist, the facilitator was able to deliver detailed valuable insights into Hoarding Disorder. The workshop was delivered in an engaging, enjoyable manner.

"Our staff thoroughly enjoyed this CCE course. They now feel more confident with utlising the assessment tools and undertaking interventions to help understand and treat Hoarding Disorder."
