Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This course aims to consolidate material learned throughout the year to ensure proficient verbal and non-verbal skills development. It also introduces a variety of new material to ensure you are prepared for the second year program. New vocabulary and grammatical material will be introduced to further your ability to converse.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- use genitive case to talk about the possession of things
- talk about things you like to do in your spare time
- use adverbs of time, days of the week and months of the year
- hold a more complex conversation about your family and friends
- talk about what you need to do, and things that you are allowed and not allowed to do
- discuss your daily routine
- speak of past and future events using past and future tenses.
Content
- Genitive singular of nouns, eg "I'd like a bottle of wine please"
- Genitive case - asking for things and expressing possession, eg "Do you have wine" or "It's Andrew's book"
- Genitive personal pronouns, eg "I can't see him"
- Liking and loving - leisure activities, eg "I love the theatre and the ballet"
- Dative case with 'I like' and 'it appeals to me'; expressing preferences, eg "I like tennis, but prefer swimming"
- Dative case with 'who for', eg "I am buying a present for my friend"
- Dative case with 'along', eg "I am walking along the street"
- Dative case with 'allowed' and 'not allowed', eg "I am not allowed to have chocolate"
- Dative case with 'need to' and 'have to', eg "I need to send a parcel to my brother"
- Days of the week
- Future tense
- Talking about daily events
- Past tense
- Months of the year
Intended audience
Suitable for continuing A1 level students, those who have completed Russian 103, or who have completed 70 hours of recent tuition.

Delivery style
Delivered as a series of interactive workshops and active participation is encouraged. Our tutors use communicative method, so from the very first lesson you will practice conversation in pairs or small groups.
A typical lesson includes engaging activities, such as games, presentations, simple readings, audio and video presentations, and practice conversations.
In addition to the textbook, tutors introduce actual audio, video and reading materials, such as extracts from Russian films, television, radio programs, and newspapers.
Prescribed text
The textbook and accompanying CD are designed specifically for each level. The text is used for class activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice between meetings. The text should be purchased only after confirmation is received that it is going ahead. This usually occurs 5 business days before the class begins. The appropriate textbook and CD for this course is Russian 104 (Level 4).
