Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This course will expand on the topics covered in French 101 and 102 (or equivalent). Your skills will be further developed through various class activities. This course focuses on topics such as hobbies, jobs and family. Grammatical and phonological elements are introduced as you work on your French speaking, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- define a person’s characteristics and personality traits
- talk about your family
- listen to a formal announcement (wedding, birth…) and react appropriately
- engage in a simple discussion asking how others are
- attend a doctor’s appointment and describe what’s wrong
- state the time of day and day of the week
- talk about your daily routine
- make arrangements to meet friends
- invite someone to an event.

This course covers the following topics:
- discuss tastes, activities and interests
- discuss your profession
- discuss your family and their activities
- describe a person: character traits
- suggest, invite, accept or refuse an invitation
- arrange a meeting
- give basic instructions
- avoir mal à + parts of the body
- adjectives: masculine/feminine/plural
- possessive adjectives
- tonic pronouns
- tell the time
- speak about your daily routine, your usual activities and your schedule
- express an obligation
- arrange a meeting
- arrange going out
- modality verbs + infinitive verb: devoir/il faut/pouvoir/vouloir
- the imperative mood
- near future tense
- expressions of time and frequency
- vocabulary for topics:
- the Internet and media
- socialising
- daily routine
- housework
- phonetic: pronunciation of the time, nasal sound, the past, working on specific sounds and spellings of sounds.
Intended audience
Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed all levels of French up to 102 or who have completed 45 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.
Delivery style
Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.
