Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Modern Greek is spoken by over 15 million people world-wide, in Greece and various other countries in the European Union. This beginner’s course will introduce the alphabet, greetings and introductions and how to describe various daily activities. Some of these activities include arranging accommodation, transportation, shopping and ordering food and drink. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Read the Greek alphabet and be able to read and write basic sentences in Greek.
  2. Extend their Greek vocabulary to enable communication of basic requests and responses.
  3. Exchange basic greetings in Greek, introduce themselves and others, ask and respond to questions about personal details such as name, nationality, family, work and pastimes.
  4. Describe family members and use appropriate phrases at social occasions.
  5. Ask and give directions using a map of a Greek city or town.
  6. Use numbers in a variety of situations, shopping, and concepts of time.
  7. Order items in Greek from a Greek Taverna menu.
  8. Communicate in Greek when buying various items from a variety of stores using Euro currency, such as tickets, food or other items.
  9. Express their likes and dislikes using adjectives.
  10. Discuss elements of the Greek language and culture (e.g. learning appropriate phrases for social occasions).
  11. Identify grammatical concepts in the Greek language including nouns (declension), verbs (conjugation – present tense), adjectives, articles and pronouns (personal and possessive).

Content

Aligned with level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This course covers the following topics:

  • The Greek alphabet
  • Greetings
  • Introducing yourself and others
  • Daily encounters – accommodation, transport, buying a ticket, shopping, ordering food and drinks

Intended Audience

Suitable for beginner A1 level students. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Delivery

This course is delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Prescribed text

There is no prescribed text for this course. Handouts will be provided in class.

Supplementary text

One of the following dictionaries is highly recommended:

Stavropoulos, D.N., Oxford Greek-English Learner’s Dictionary (ISBN 978-0-19-432567-7); OR
Oxford English-Greek Learner’s Dictionary.

Alternatively, any small English-Greek dictionary will be helpful for this beginners level.

Selected Language and Culture courses that teach spoken language may include use of language immersion (course instruction in the selected language) as part of the training strategy.
