Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course is ideal for preparing for travel, as you will learn basic greetings and introductions, how to express likes and dislikes, and travel by bus and train. Grammatical elements are also introduced as you start to work on your speaking and listening skills. Noun, article and prepositions use will be introduced as well as basic pronunciation, writing and reading skills. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Greet others, and introduce themselves and others at an initial meeting.
  2. Order food and drink at a cafè or restaurant.
  3. Describe their activities during the week and on weekends ie leisure activities.
  4. Express their likes and dislikes.

This course covers the following topics:

  • Greetings
  • Introducing yourself and others
  • Ordering in a café or restaurant
  • Pronunciation
  • Likes and dislikes
  • Talking about free time and leisure activities
  • Nouns - (singular and plural)
  • Introduction to verbs including essere (to be), avere (to have), fare (to do or to make)
  • Articles – definite and indefinite
  • Introduction to prepositions

Intended Audience

Suitable for beginner A1 level students. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Delivery

This course is delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

This textbook is used for course Levels 101 to 104. It is based on a language learning through conversation method.

Based on Units 1-4 of the above text. The text is used for activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice.

Italian Grammar 4e (Schaum’s Outline) by Germano & Schmitt.

This is a ‘fast track’ option in which learning is accelerated with meetings twice weekly over four weeks.
