Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The third level of the first year program. You will learn how to make comparisons about people and places, talk about past activities and learn new grammatical structures. Various activities will assist in developing your verbal and non-verbal language skills.

Suitable for those who have completed all levels of Brazilian Portuguese up to 102 or 45 hours of recent face to face tuition.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Ask basic questions about products and clothing in shops.
  2. Express preferences and choices, and make comparisons.
  3. Describe places and activities.
  4. Locate objects around the house.
  5. Give directions.

Content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Going shopping (verbs, nouns, fractions and monetary amounts) - to ask about ‘costs’, measurement', ‘percentage’, 'to buy/sell/promote products'
  • Shopping expressions – to ask for a discount, to express contentment/ discontentment with a product, etc.
  • Buying clothes (verbs and clothing vocabulary) – to buy, to put on hold, to exchange, to return a product
  • Forms of payment
  • Expressions: “custar os olhos da cara”; “ser uma pechincha”; "fazer um precinho camarada"
  • Demonstrative pronouns: this, these, that, those
  • Making comparisons – to express preferences and choice reasons
  • Describing places & activities
  • Locating objects in the house
  • Imperative (informal / formal) – to give directions
  • Introduction to the simple past tense and its use

Intended Audience

Suitable for A2 level students, those who have completed all levels of Brazilian Portuguese up to 102 or those who have completed 45 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery

This course is delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Selected Language and Culture courses that teach spoken language may include use of language immersion (course instruction in the selected language) as part of the training strategy.
