Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Ideal for preparing for travel or work commitments, you will learn the basics of language and build upon French 101. This course focuses on topics such as the city, accommodation, travel and outdoor activities. Grammatical and phonological elements are introduced as you work on your French speaking, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • talk about your city
  • name and locate places in a town
  • obtain information about local accommodation and make a booking
  • find your way around (understand directions)
  • write a postcard
  • talk about the weather and leisure time activities
  • indicate your country of origin, or destination
  • talk about yourself, your hobbies and leisure time activities
  • talk about your profession.


This course covers the following topics:

  • the city
  • accommodation when travelling
  • writing a postcard when on holidays
  • enquiring about, and booking accommodation
  • giving your impressions about a place
  • speaking about activities
  • discussing the weather
  • discussing tastes, activities and interests
  • dissussing professions
  • definite and indefinite articles
  • prepositions for place
  • demonstrative adjectives
  • asking/answering simple questions: why/because
  • asking “yes” or “no” questions
  • irregular verbs at present tense: prendre/descendre/venir
  • vocabulary for topics:
    • city
    • accommodation
    • postcard/mail
    • weather
  • phonetic: un/une, accent grave/accent aigu, asking a question, de/d', pronunciation of -ent
  • regular verbs + noun: aimer/adorer/détester
  • irregular verbs at present tense + preposition: faire, aller, dire
  • vocabulary for topics:
    • reality TV
    • hobbies
    • jobs
    • dating websites
    • family
    • body parts
  • phonetic: feminine/masculine, working on specific sounds.

Intended audience

Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed French 101 or who have completed 20 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.
