Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course will expand on the work covered from in French courses 101 to 103 (or equivalent). Your skills will be further developed through various class activities that will teach you how to use your language skills. This course focuses on topics such as: telling the time and arranging a meeting. Grammatical and phonological elements are introduced as you work on your French speaking, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills. This level prepares learners for the second year program (201-204).


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • state the time of day and day of the week
  • talk about your daily routine
  • make arrangements to meet friends
  • invite someone to an event
  • tell past events.


This course covers the following topics:

  • telling time
  • speak about your daily routine, usual activities and your schedule
  • expressing an obligation
  • arranging a meeting
  • going out
  • understand a questionnaire
  • tell about past events
  • irregular verbs + infinitive mode: devoir/il faut/pouvoir/vouloir
  • the imperative tense
  • past tense: le passé composé
  • near future tense
  • expressions of time and frequency
  • vocabulary for topics: “the Internet and media”, socialising", “daily routine”, "housework"
  • phonetic: pronunciation of the time, nasal sound, the past, working on specific sounds and spellings of sounds.

Intended audience

Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed all levels of French up to 103 or who have completed 70 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.
