If you want to learn to speak Thai, our Thai classes are ideal for adult learners to enjoy a practical and social experience while you learn Thai language and culture. Learn Thai the smart way with Thai courses at CCE, the University of Sydney.

Continue to develop your formal and informal conversation skills on a variety of topics including regional cultures and beliefs, current affairs, initiating and continuing business, and learning some idiomatic expressions. Students will practice reading, comprehension, pronunciation, and definitions in passages from newspaper and internet articles. Each reading has a vocabulary list where new and difficult words are introduced.

Suitable for those who have completed all levels up to 402 or 345 hours of recent face to face tuition.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Engage in everyday conversations about different topics.
  2. Introduce useful classifiers with correct structures.
  3. Discuss and recognise more linking words.
  4. Gain insight into northern Thai peoples and their culture.
  5. Discuss and answer questions from reading articles.

Content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Discussion about everyday situations: I am happy when... , I am at home and I... , It has been a long time since... , In last two months I...
  • Use of classifiers and structure in sentences
  • Use of phua, sam rap, hay, khuen yuu kap, phrom thang
  • Use of khuen in long sentences
  • Reading the history of Lanna, Chiangmai and culture
  • Reading articles from social media, current affairs and from internet news

Intended Audience

Suitable for those who have completed all levels up to Thai 402 or 345 hours of recent face to face tuition.

Delivery Style

This course is delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. Students will be guided through a variety of complex texts and will engage in lively discussions on specialised topics in a relaxed atmosphere.

Prescribed Text

Students are not required to purchase a prescribed text for this course. All course materials will be provided in class.

Selected Language and Culture courses that teach spoken language may include use of language immersion (course instruction in the selected language) as part of the training strategy.
