Thai Course 102 (Level 2)

Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course covers basic communication in everyday life situations: asking for directions; telling the time; making an appointment; talking about your daily routine; calendar days, months and years. Grammatical themes are centred around the present, past and future tense.

Basic Thai scripts in reading and writing will also be presented so you can practice reading and basic sound systems in class. Components of Thai writing for consonants, vowels and tone markers will also be covered, as will writing basic open syllables used in everyday words and short sentences.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • communicate through listening and speaking very simple exchanges in relation to basic survival needs in everyday life situations
  • make an appointment (including time and place)
  • talk about daily activities
  • demonstrate a basic capacity for reading and writing in Thai
  • identify basic components of Thai writing for consonants, vowels and tone markers
  • read and recognise words in open syllables and in short sentences
  • discuss the relevant aspects of Thai culture and etiquette for everyday personal interactions.

Content

This course covers the following topics:

  • a brief introduction to reading and written Thai characters, consonants, vowels, tone markers
  • telling time and making an appointment
  • talking about daily routine and activities
  • understanding the calendar by talking about present, future and past times
  • writing basic open syllables in everyday words and also write in short sentences.

Intended audience

Suitable for continuing A1 level students, those who have completed Thai 101 or who have completed 20 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.
