Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Ivrit min HaHatchala (Hebrew from Scratch) is a program developed and taught at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem which is designed for teaching for communicational purposes (Ulpan). The program introduces useful vocabulary, topics and syntax in a gradual sequence which enables the learners to build and expand on their acquired knowledge. You will learn to read and communicate in different contexts. It is an interactive program and uses a variety of methods both for teaching and learning. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

There is an audio program which accompanies the prescribed textbook and includes all the texts and dialogues in an audio format. This can be purchased separately.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • identify the Hebrew alphabet and sound system
  • read and write short texts in simple Hebrew
  • discuss the verb system
  • introduce yourself and others
  • hear and speak basic words within the Modern Hebrew vocabulary
  • comprehend texts in simple Hebrew.

  • biblical phrases
  • getting acquainted – greetings and responses
  • introducing yourself and others

  • directions
  • expressing your wishes.

Intended audience

Suitable for beginner A1 level students. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.
