Project Management 101 Course

Project Management. Take the lead.

This beginner’s project management course teaches essential workplace skills for anyone involved in projects, or those looking to move into project management as a career. Project managers and team members are more successful when they use best practice techniques in their projects, no matter the scale or impact of the project. Learn to approach your everyday work as a project and adopt essential techniques to create efficiencies and produce better outcomes.

Aims

This course aims to build on your project experience, as a project manager or team member, by providing some essential principles for project success. We examine best practice knowledge areas, processes, tool and techniques, and assess how these can be applied in a scalable way, to every project you work on in the future.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • plan and facilitate your project kick-off using best practice techniques
  • use the essential knowledge areas to initiate, plan, execute and close your project
  • apply proven processes, tools and techniques to any project, regardless of the outcome, size or complexity
  • utilise the project constraints to determine the key priorities for your project
  • implement a structured approach to identify your key requirements and manage project scope in order to avoid scope creep
  • create a simple, yet realistic schedule, with clearly defined responsibilities and due dates, based on stakeholder needs and project constraints
  • develop a communications plan to satisfy your stakeholder’s differing needs
  • close a project to ensure lessons learned are captured
  • accrue 8 PDUs towards retaining your PMP accreditation.

Content

This workshop covers the following topics:

Introduction

  • Define projects versus business as usual or operational activities
  • Reasons for project failure
  • Understand project success factors

Initiate a project

  • Balancing project constraints
  • Determine priorities on your project with key stakeholders
  • Define a typical project lifecycle
  • Utilise key project templates to guide you through the lifecycle
  • Kick-off a project to align stakeholder expectations
  • Write a Project Charter

Scope management

  • Clarify the goals of the project using scope management techniques
  • Determine scope inclusions and exclusions
  • Create and utilise a work breakdown structure
  • Tools to avoid scope creep

Time management

  • Best practice steps to building a schedule
  • Define task dependencies
  • Use a tool to improve estimates – useful for durations and costs
  • Simplified scheduling tool to ensure commitment by resources

Communication

  • Communication plan to ensure stakeholders expectations are being managed
  • Activity to define the importance of communication

Innovation

  • Activity to bring together all aspects of planning and how this is applied during execution of a project

Close a project

  • Close out a project using proven methods.

Intended audience

This course is designed for:

  • new or less experienced project managers
  • team members, subject matter experts or stakeholders involved in planning or delivering projects
  • anyone interested in entering the project management profession
  • anyone wanting to be more organised in their work.

Delivery style

This one-day workshop includes a combination of theory, group discussions, relevant and insightful videos, case studies and in class activities. Group activities include:

  • an exercise to help avoid project failure
  • an activity to demonstrate misunderstanding in scope
  • completion of various best practice templates for a project chosen by each group
  • an enlightening listening test
  • interactive activity on closing a project.

Materials

Course materials which include course activities and handouts. Tools and templates to use on projects will be sent after completion of the workshop.

Additional information

CCE will issue you with a Statement of Completion.

This course will provide you with 8 PDUs with the Project Management Institute (PMI). This is awarded at the discretion of the external party.
