Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This advanced course studies a selection of classical texts, reviewing the grammatical constructions and syntax, and discussing the texts in their cultural and historical perspective.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • read and translate unedited excerpts of original Latin, both prose and poetry
  • discuss the developing differences of style and idiom between Latin prose and poetry from early to late Latin
  • recognise and discuss the differences between historical, rhetorical, epistolary, philosophical, and poetic Latin
  • discuss the gradual transformation of semantics and syntax of the classical literary language prompted by the new spiritual, intellectual and cultural atmosphere characterising the first century of Imperial Rome.


This course covers the following topics:

  • study of a selection of classical texts
  • review of the grammatical constructions and syntax of each text
  • discussion of the texts from a cultural and historical perspective.

Intended audience

Suitable for advanced-level Latin readers who have completed over 200 hours of recent study, and who wish to develop their knowledge and appreciation of Latin through the intensive study of classical texts.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. You are encouraged to study the upcoming material before each meeting.

Selected Language and Culture courses that teach spoken language may include use of language immersion (course instruction in the selected language) as part of the training strategy.
