Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course will expand on the work covered in French courses 101 to 104 (or equivalent). Your skills will be further developed through various class activities. This course focuses on topics such as seasons and the weather, outdoor activities, and tour programs. Grammatical and phonological elements are also introduced as you work on your French speaking, oral comprehension, reading and writing skills.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • talk about sensations, perceptions and feelings
  • talk about the seasons and weather
  • locate and describe a place
  • talk about outdoor activities
  • comprehend a tour program
  • write a holiday letter
  • talk about food, your tastes and consumption
  • read and write a menu.


This course covers the following topics:

  • expressing sensations, perceptions and feelings
  • talking about the seasons
  • understanding/giving information about the weather
  • speaking about outdoor activities
  • understanding the program of a visit
  • speaking about your hobbies and cultural activities
  • writing a holiday letter
  • grammatical structure to talk about the weather: Il fait + adjective
  • position of qualifying adjectives
  • pronoun y
  • verbs of perception
  • future tense
  • present progressive tense
  • the pronoun on (2)
  • vocabulary for topics:
    • seasons and climate
    • French islands
    • colours
    • geographic localisation
    • outdoor activities
    • city tour
  • phonetic: working on specific sounds and spellings of sounds, pronunciation of er verbs at the future tense
  • speaking about culinary tastes and diet
  • understand and compose a menu.

Intended audience

Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed all levels of French up to 104 or who have completed 95 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.
