Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This course will teach you how to describe various professions, speak on the phone, make arrangements and describe your life. Grammatical themes taught include the use of adverbs, various tenses and locative cases. All of this material will be presented with an emphasis on developing your Cyrillic alphabet understanding as well as other reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- identify simple concepts used in Russian grammar, such as tenses and cases
- talk about the locations of things and people, using locative case
- hold a simple phone conversation, ask a person to come the phone, leave a message etc
- talk about where you work and live, the language/s you speak and the things you like to do using the present tense
- use numbers 1 to 100
- use adverbs of time
- talk about places being open and closed
- discuss past and future events using past and future tenses.

- Locative case: where - prepositions: in, on, at
- Telephone etiquette - masculine animate nouns in accusative case
- Present tense of verbs - conjugation 1: to work, to live
- Present tense of verbs - conjugation 2: to speak, to love
- Adverbs: well, slowly, fast, freely
- Professions
- What is allowed/ not allowed
- Cardinal numbers 1 to 100
- Gender agreement
- Locative case: where - accusative case: where to?
- Making a date on the phone
- Past and future tense of verbs
- Talking about yourself: where you live, what you do, where you work, what you like and don't like
Intended audience
Suitable for continuing A1 level students, those who have completed Russian 101, or who have completed 20 hours of recent tuition.

Delivery style
Delivered as a series of interactive workshops and active participation is encouraged. Our tutors use communicative method, so from the very first lesson you will practice conversation in pairs or small groups.
A typical lesson includes engaging activities, such as games, presentations, simple readings, audio and video presentations, and practice conversations. In addition to the textbook, tutors introduce actual audio, video and reading materials, such as extracts from Russian films, television, radio programs and newspapers.
Prescribed text
The textbook and accompanying CD are designed specifically for each level. The text is used for class activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice between meetings. The text should be purchased only after confirmation is received that the course is going ahead. This usually occurs 5 business days before the class begins. The appropriate textbook and CD for this course is Russian 102 (Level 2).
