Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This introductory course covers various topics including Russian greetings and goodbyes, asking for directions, introducing oneself and the basic of shopping. You will also be introduced to the Cyrillic alphabet and various grammatical rules. This is a beginner's course and no prior knowledge of the language is required.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- interpret the Cyrillic alphabet and read street signs
- greet people in Russian and say farewell, give and respond to thanks
- introduce yourself, talk about your nationality and job
- ask for directions
- talk about your family members
- hold a simple conversation in a shop, to buy things, or order food in a restaurant
- talk to customs and passport control officers when entering Russia.

Delivery style
Delivered as a series of interactive workshops and active participation is encouraged. Our tutors use communicative method, so from the very first lesson you will practice conversation in pairs or small groups.
A typical lesson includes engaging activities, such as games, presentations, simple readings, audio and video presentations, and practice conversations.
Prescribed text
The textbook and accompanying CD are designed specifically for each level. The text is used for class activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice between meetings. The text should be purchased only after confirmation is received from the Centre that the course is going ahead. This usually occurs 5 business days before the class begins. The appropriate textbook and CD for this course is 101 (Beginners).
