B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This intermediate Japanese course will further develop your ability to read, write, listen and speak Japanese, and follows prescribed texts for reference and practice between sessions.

It is suitable for those who have completed all levels of Japanese up to 404, or 395 hours of recent tuition.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • talk about your experience travelling
  • book train travel and accommodation through a travel agency
  • explain why you would or wouldn’t like to have a home stay whilst visiting Japan
  • politely ask someone to do/not to do something
  • describe symptoms to a doctor
  • talk about your experience of being unwell as a child
  • read and write vocabulary, using approximately 560 Kanji
  • read and write short sentences that include vocabulary, using approximately 560 Kanji.



  • Make a reservation for transport and accommodation
  • Tell a travel agency about the type of accommodation you would like
  • Read a train timetable

Problems with your host family

  • Make a complaint
  • Provide an apology
  • Make a request

When you become unwell

  • Explain/describe your symptoms
  • Give advice

Intended audience

Suitable for B1 level participants, those who have completed all levels of Japanese up to 404, or those who have completed 395 hours of recent tuition.


Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Prescribed text

An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, Revised Edition (Textbook and Workbook)
Based on chapters 10 to 12 of the above text. The text is used for activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice.

Intermediate Kanji Book Vol. 1, Bonjinsha (ISBN: 9784893588104)
Lessons 4 and 5 are covered.
