Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Arabic 104 builds upon the previous three terms of work and prepares you for the second year Arabic program. Class activities are based around the recommended text for easy reference and practice between sessions to perfect your skills.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • recognise the present tense agreement
  • recognise the object pronoun agreement
  • recognise verb stems and some of their patterns
  • recognise the days of the week
  • recognise the structure of the noun and verbal sentence
  • increase your vocabulary by an additional 1000 words
  • write a short paragraph about the weather, a city and an occupation.

This course covers the following topics:

  • the city
  • the weather
  • occupations
  • Noun-adjective phrases
  • Adverbs
  • The Demonstratives.

Intended audience

Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed all levels of Arabic up to 103 or who have completed 70 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Prescribed text

Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Callum Al-cArabiyya: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic: Part One (3rd Edition) by Abbas Al-Tonsi, Kristen Brustad & Mahmoud Al-Batal, Georgetown University Press, ISBN: 9781589017368.

Based on Chapters 4-5 of the above text. The text is used for activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice between meetings. Additional supplementary resources will also be provided to cover general topics.
