PMP/CAPM Exam Preparation Course

Designed for project managers and team members who are contemplating taking the PMP® or CAPM® examination with the Project Management Institute who wish to build on their previous experience and understanding of project management principles.

Attendees are assumed to have had previous training in project management principles, equivalent to the more case oriented workshops such as Project Management: Essentials or Project Management: The Complete Guide.

Outlines the entire content and structure of the PMBOK® Guide, with detailed instructions on how to review and interpret its content and prepare for the relevant examination. The structure of the exams themselves is also discussed, including the numbers of questions allocated to each topic and the scoring methods used. Sample quiz questions are provided on each topic, with a student workbook outlining the main revision points for future study.

Participants receive a copy of all the slides presented in the workshop plus a supplementary student workbook.


Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Assess their current level of knowledge and the main areas to review to achieve a successful result, based upon the presentations and practice tests provided in the workshop.
  2. Use the study resources provided in the workshop and course materials, including study hints and specific examples likely to appear in some tests.
  3. Use the context and content of the PMBOK® Guide (6th Edition) to prepare for the PMI’s examinations.
  4. Use previous project management training to prepare for the PMI’s examinations.
  5. Use the other recommended resources to develop a realistic study plan and timetable to pass the exams.
  6. Develop a study plan that includes key topics to review and the additional knowledge expected of a candidate apart from the PMBOK® Guide.
  7. Obtain relevant evidence that meet the PMI’s requirements for certification and for maintaining it after award.
  8. Prepare an application for the PMI examinations complying with all the required eligibility criteria, including training prerequisites and workplace experience.


Covers in detail the activities in each of the 5 processes of Project Management, namely Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring/Controlling and Closing, with an emphasis on how the Project Management Institute examines these topics across the 9 Knowledge Areas of project management.

Participants will study in depth the processes as outlined in the PMBOK® Guide:

  • Project Scope Management
  • Project Time Management
  • Project Cost Management
  • Project Quality Management
  • Project Human Resource Management
  • Project Communications Management
  • Project Risk Management
  • Project Procurement Management

Participants will accrue 21 PDU’s towards retaining PMP or CAPM credential with PDUs valid for:

  • 6 years for those seeking accreditation for the first time
  • 3 years for those seeking to renew accreditation

Intended Audience

Designed for Project Managers and team members who are preparing for a professional credential in Project Management, and who wish to build upon their prior training and workplace experience in project management.

It is also useful for project management related staff, such as members of Project Management Offices or contractors, who wish to learn or refresh their knowledge of Project Management principles and understand current international standards in Project Management.


  • Participants have attended Project Management: The Complete Guide or an equivalent course and are familiar with the theory of project management and PMBOK®.
  • Participants have a copy of the PMBOK® and have read it prior to attendance. It is essential that students bring a copy of the PMBOK® with them to class.
  • Participants have sufficient work experience and training to satisfy the PMI they are eligible to sit the exam.
  • Participants have applied or know how to apply for the exam via the PMI website or in hard copy.

Delivery Style

Intensive and will require full-time attendance for the entire duration.

Whilst the presentation slides provide full details of each topic, participants are encouraged to raise any specific questions within each topic for clarification by the presenter and group discussion. All topics will be covered in depth but additional readings and practice will be given for overnight review on Days 1 and 2.


Sample quiz questions and a practice exam modelled on the accreditation exams from the Project Management Institute will be provided. No formal assessment feedback will be given, but sample answers will be provided for each quiz question.


Consists of three consecutive days of training totalling 21 contact hours. There is also some overnight reading of approximately 30 minutes on the first 2 evenings.


The material follows A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (the PMBOK® Guide), published by the Project Management Institute Standards Committee. It presupposes some familiarity with project management practice and terminology from workplace experience or earlier project management training.
