Entrepreneurship Course: Creating and Testing Business Ideas

Small Business. Big ideas for small business.

This entrepreneurship course explores new business ideation and validation against the backdrop of accelerating global change. We will stimulate your ideation process and help you identify and then validate business opportunities. You will consider your new business idea with respect to the global trends of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and robotics, and consider the impact of climate change.

Aims

This course aims to give you a better understanding of where ideation comes from and how it can be used to generate potential new business ideas. You will also learn to test and validate your business ideas – giving you evidence as to whether your business idea is likely to succeed.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • generate specific new business ideas which take advantage of the stated global trends
  • design basic validation tests for new business ideas
  • validate your business idea/s
  • evaluate your business idea and judge if it will be successful in the marketplace
  • identify the necessary tools and results needed to validate a business idea.

Content

  • The course begins with an introduction to ideation, quickly covering our current understanding from the academic literature. We then embark on a series of interactive activities, incrementally building your experience and knowledge of new business ideation.
  • We will then consider a macro-level understanding of the most significant global trends that are changing the world around us, including AI, robotics, urbanisation, immigration, and many more.
  • Each student will participate in an activity considering the potential impacts of global trends on their chosen industries.
  • The course will circle back to academic concepts of ideation and how these might be practically applied to new business ideation with respect to global trends. You will contribute to an in-depth brainstorming exercise, taking into consideration the best practices gained from the academic literature.
  • A demonstration of different methods of business validation, outlining their proper use and appropriate areas of application.
  • A detailed example of a business validation process, designed with a particular business idea in mind.
  • An opportunity for you to design your own business validation process. This will be discussed in class and reviewed by fellow course participants.
  • Putting the validation process into practice outside the classroom.

Over the space of two weeks following the course conclusion, you are invited to have regular check-ins with the tutor to give progress updates on the business validation process and to receive on-going support and advice.

Intended audience

Suitable for those interested in entrepreneurship or have an entrepreneurial inclination.

Designed for those with no/little experience in entrepreneurship and want to gain insights about how they could do it themselves.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites; however a working knowledge of how your industry operates on a macro-scale will be useful.

Delivery style

Delivered using an experiential learning method and supported by visual and auditory methods. Coursework includes an in-depth brainstorming activity where you will be challenged to consider the potential impacts of global changes on your chosen industry, and the impact these changes may create for potential new businesses, supported by visual and auditory methods. Each business validation process will be tailored to your idea/s and level of experience.
