Offered in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney. The Confucius Institute is based on a partnership with Fudan University, in collaboration with the Office of The Chinese Language Council International in China (Hanban). It is managed by the the Office of Global Engagement. The first to be established in New South Wales, the Institute has attracted thousands of people to its popular Chinese language and culture programs.

Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course covers Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1, Lessons 7/8 to 10 and is taught over ten weekly sessions of two hours per week. This course and Chinese Mandarin 1021: Standard is also available over four hours in two sessions per week through Chinese (Mandarin) 102: Intensive.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss around 100 vocabulary items and recognise around 110 Chinese characters.
  2. Write a properly formatted letter.
  3. Convey their modesty.
  4. Invite friends out.
  5. Discuss the colour, size and price of clothing or shoes.
  6. Recognise Chinese currency, count money and decide the correct change.
  7. Return or exchange merchandise at a store.
  8. Speak about different means of transportation.
  9. Give directions.
  10. Thank someone for their help.
  11. Provide New Year’s wishes.

  • Introduces 算了 (suàn le), 谁呀 (shéi ya), 是吗 (shì ma), 给 (gěi), 要 (yào)
  • Adverbs 太 (tài), 真 (zhēn), 就 (jiù) and 正在 (zhèngzài)
  • Time expressions, directional/descriptive compliments, 怎么 (zěnme) in questions, 能 (néng) and 会 (huì)
  • Sentence structures: 一边…一边… (yìbiān...yìbiān...); 除了…以外, 还…(chúle...yǐwài, hái…)
  • 或者 (huòzhě) and 还是 (háishi); 先 (xiān)…再 (zài)
  • 还是 (háishi)…(吧) (ba); 每 (měi)…都 (dōu); 要 (yào)…了 (le)

Intended Audience

Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed Chinese Mandarin 1021 or who have completed 60 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery Style

Delivered in the form of an interactive workshop where active participation is encouraged.

Prescribed Text

Both simplified and traditional character versions of the textbook and the two workbooks are available, however the simplified version will be taught in the classroom. Students can also opt for the electronic versions of the materials.

The textbook is required, while the workbook and character workbook are recommended, but optional.

In addition to purchasing online, students may also be able to source textbooks from our preferred textbook suppliers.

Textbooks should only be purchased after confirmation is received from us. This usually occurs up to 5 days prior to commencement.
