Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
This course covers Integrated Chinese, Volume 1, Lessons 6 to 8(1), and is taught over ten weekly sessions of two hours per week.

Offered in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney. The Confucius Institute is based on a partnership with Fudan University and is managed by the Office of Global and Research Engagement. The first to be established in New South Wales, the Institute has attracted thousands of people to its popular Chinese language and culture programs.
Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- discuss around 100 vocabulary items and recognise about 70 Chinese characters
- make and answer phone calls, and request a return phone call
- make an appointment on the phone
- politely ask for a favour
- discuss one’s study habits and experience learning Chinese
- comment on one’s performance, such as in character writing, singing and dancing etc.
- describe your daily routine
- write a simple diary entry in proper format.

- Introduces 算了 (suàn le), 谁呀 (shéi ya), 是吗 (shì ma), 给 (gěi), 要 (yào)
- Adverbs 太 (tài), 真 (zhēn), 就 (jiù) and 正在 (zhèngzài)
- Time expressions, directional/descriptive compliments, 怎么 (zěnme) in questions, 能 (néng) and 会 (huì)
- Sentence structures: 一边…一边… (yìbiān...yìbiān...); 除了…以外, 还…(chúle...yǐwài, hái…)
- 或者 (huòzhě) and 还是 (háishi); 先 (xiān)…再 (zài)
- 还是 (háishi)…(吧) (ba); 每 (měi)…都 (dōu); 要 (yào)…了 (le)
Intended audience
Suitable for A1 level students, those who have completed Chinese Mandarin 1012 or who have completed 40 hours of recent tuition.
Delivery style
Delivered in the form of an interactive workshop where active participation is encouraged.
Prescribed text
Both simplified and traditional character versions of the textbook and the two workbooks are available, however the simplified version will be taught in the classroom. You can also opt for the electronic version of materials.

While the textbook is required, the workbook and character workbook are optional.
All books are available in 3rd and 4th editions. If you already own a 3rd edition copy, you're welcome to use it. If not, please purchase the 4th edition.
