Spoken English, Grammar and Pronunciation Course

English. Develop your command of the English language with us.

For people coming from another language, practicing conversation is essential in becoming proficient. This course will give you confidence with your conversations in informal settings, whether they occur in your workplace or with new or existing contacts.

Each week we combine conversation and exercises in different kinds of speech with revision of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. This course is run by an academic specialist.


This course aims to:

  • improve skills in speaking for conversation and work and study purposes
  • improve skills in grammar in relation to practical speech
  • improve vocabulary
  • provide a learning situation that includes interactive conversation and language instruction
  • combine group conversation about newspapers, television and topics of general interest with language learning
  • combine conversation in with presentations by members of the group in relation to social, work and study situations.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate improved skills in speech
  • demonstrate increased skills in conversation for a wide range of purposes including work, study and social interaction
  • demonstrate increased skills in pronunciation and grammar
  • demonstrate increased skills in the development of your vocabulary
  • gain wider competence in conversation about a wide range of material from newspapers and magazines to books and television.


This course covers the following topics:

  • an introduction to speech and its range of different voices
  • regular conversation practice
  • regular exercises in pronunciation
  • revision of basic grammar
  • reading and discussion of selected material from newspapers and magazines to television and films
  • vocabulary enrichment
  • spoken presentations by members of the group on topics of their choice for work, study and general interest
  • interactive, rewarding and interesting conversation.

Intended audience

Suitable for people with an elementary level of competence who wish to increase their skills in the spoken language and at the same time revise and extend grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. This course is designed for people already engaged in the work place across a wide range of occupations, and for students. It has been designed in response to interest from EAL members of the multicultural Sydney professional workforce. It is also rewarding for native speakers who would like to achieve a higher standard in speaking for work or educational purposes.
