Offered in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney. The Confucius Institute is based on a partnership with Fudan University, in collaboration with the Office of The Chinese Language Council International in China (Hanban). It is managed by the the Office of Global Engagement. The first to be established in New South Wales, the Institute has attracted thousands of people to its popular Chinese language and culture programs.

Learning Aims

Chinese (Mandarin) Course 1032: Standard covers Integrated Chinese Level 1, Part 2, Lesson 13 to 15 and is taught over two hours per week in one session. The content of this course and Chinese (Mandarin) Course 1031: Standard is also available over four hours per week in two sessions by completing Chinese (Mandarin) Course 103: Intensive.

  • Introduces 118 vocabulary items.
  • Covers more topics such as talking about birthday parties, asking directions and seeing a doctor.
  • Concentrates on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Students will further expand their vocabulary and study more complex linguistic structures to enhance their confidence in communicating in Chinese.
  • Deepen understanding of Chinese culture and society.

Course Content

This Chinese course covers the following topics and grammar points:

  • Asking directions – where are you off to? and going to Chinatown.
  • Birthday parties – let’s go to a party and attending a birthday party.
  • Seeing a doctor – my stomach ache is killing me and allergies.
  • The dynamic particle过 (guo).
  • The adverb还 (hái).
  • Direction and location words.
  • 刚 (gāng) vs 刚才 (gāngcái), adj. + 一点儿 (yì diǎnr).
  • 那么 (nàme) indicating degree, 起来 (qǐ lái) indicating the beginning of an action, 把 (bǎ) construction, 死 (sǐ) indicating an extreme degree.
  • Verbal phrases and subject-predicate phrases used as attributives
  • Time duration, times of actions, indicating an action in progress.
  • Reduplication of verbs.
  • 到 (dào) + place + 去 (qù) + action; sentences with 是…的 (shì...de).
  • adj / v + 是 (shì) + adj / v.+ 可是/但是… (kěshì/dànshì…).
  • Comparative sentences with没(有) (méi{yǒu}).
  • 一…就… (yī...jiù...), 越来越… (yuè lái yuè...); 再说 (zàishuō), 又…又… (yòu…yòu…).

Delivery Style

This Chinese course is delivered in the form of an interactive workshop where active participation is encouraged.

Prescribed Text

Both simplified and traditional character versions of the textbook and the two workbooks are available, however the simplified version will be taught in the classroom. Students can also opt for the electronic version of Chinese course materials.

While the Textbook is required for this course, the Workbook and Character Workbook are optional, but recommended.

In addition to purchasing course materials online, students may also be able to source textbooks from our preferred textbook suppliers.

Prescribed textbooks should only be purchased after confirmation is received from us that the course will proceed. This usually occurs up to 5 days prior to class commencement.
