HSC Mathematics Preparation Course - 2 Unit (Part 1) (January)

HSC Mathematics. The smart way to prepare for your HSC.

This course is the first in a series of three Mathematics (2 Unit) courses and provides consolidation of the key content and skills from fundamental topics in the Mathematics Preliminary and HSC courses. The course covers coordinate geometry, probability, quadratic functions and fundamental ideas from differential calculus. Study skills and examination techniques will also be emphasised.

Other courses in this series include HSC Mathematics Preparation – 2 Unit (Part 2) (April) and HSC Mathematics Preparation – 2 Unit (Part 3) (July). You do not need to attend all three parts in order to benefit.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • solve multi-step problems involving coordinate geometry
  • use mathematical techniques to calculate theoretical probabilities
  • apply knowledge of the properties of a parabola, and the roots of a quadratic equation, to solve problems
  • identify the relationship between a function and its derivative and find derivatives of functions using a variety of techniques
  • answer a range of questions based on the topics covered
  • critically evaluate your own and others' solutions to improve the quality of responses in assessment tasks
  • interpret mathematical language of examination questions to better understand the steps required in a quality solution.

The following topics from the Mathematics syllabus will be covered:

  • Coordinate methods in geometry
  • Probability
  • The quadratic polynomial and the parabola
  • Tangent to a curve and derivative of a function.

Intended audience

Designed for Year 12 students (only) undertaking the Mathematics 2 Unit course (2008 syllabus).

Delivery style

Delivered as a two-day activity-based workshop where we will explore and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in a combination of lectures, tutorials and problem-solving sessions. Practice exercises are carefully graded and you will receive immediate feedback.

You will receive:

  • a course booklet including theory and worked examples, covering all syllabus dot points from the relevant topics
  • solutions to all questions in the course booklet
  • HSC Questions from recent years on the relevant topics, with sample answers provided.
