HSC Mathematics Preparation Course - Standard 2 (Part 2) (April)

Course summary

This course is the second in a series of four Mathematics Standard 2 courses designed to consolidate key content and skills from the Mathematics Standard 2 HSC course. Topics covered include Simultaneous Linear Equations, Investments and Loans, Trigonometry, and Relative Frequency and Probability.

This course is designed to review key material and provide advice and tips related to studying and examination techniques, to maximise student performance.

Other courses in this series include HSC Mathematics Preparation - Standard 2 (Part 1) (January), HSC Mathematics Preparation - Standard 2 (Part 3) (July) and HSC Mathematics - Standard 2 Exam Preparation Course (September), which focuses on preparation for end-of-year examinations. You do not need to attend all parts in order to benefit.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • represent the relationships between quantities algebraically and graphically to solve problems and make predictions in practical contexts
  • model financial situations and solve problems involving interest, depreciation and borrowing money
  • apply trigonometry to solve problems involving right-angled and non-right-angled triangles
  • solve practical problems involving ratios and rates
  • model and solve problems involving the probabilities of multistage events
  • explore and connect mathematical concepts, choose and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicate thinking and reasoning in a clear and coherent manner.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed the Year 11 Mathematics Standard course before undertaking this course.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for students studying Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2.

Delivery style

Delivered as a two-day, activity-based workshop, this course will explore and apply mathematical knowledge and skills in a combination of lectures, tutorials and problem-solving sessions. Practice exercises are reviewed, and you will receive immediate feedback. Study skills and examination techniques will also be emphasised.

  • a course booklet including theory and worked examples, covering syllabus dot points from the relevant topics
  • solutions to all questions included in the course booklet
  • a selection of relevant past examination questions, with sample answers.
