SICLE provides professional pathways for teachers and support for community language students through the development of curriculum resources and assessments.
This 42 hour Languages methodology course is designed for current teachers who wish to add Languages as a teaching method. It is suitable for primary or secondary teachers. Completion of this course and a 15 day practicum will provide participants with “Approval to teach Languages” in NSW Department schools.
Aims
The aim of this course is to provide existing non-language trained teachers with the fundamentals on how to use the NESA Language syllabi to develop engaging and sequenced language programs that enable students to demonstrate progression in language.
Outcomes
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- understand the specific issues relating to the teaching of Languages
- learn how students learn Languages
- gain a good understanding of the NESA Languages curriculum
- be exposed to different programming approaches for Languages
- learn how to develop a Unit of Work and plan a lesson for Languages based on the NESA Language syllabi
- be exposed to effective teaching strategies, resources and ICT tools that will assist them in developing engaging and differentiated tasks to cater for a range of language proficiency levels
- gain a better understanding of valid and engaging assessment practices in Languages
- learn of networking and professional support for teachers of Languages.

Assessment
- Weekly participation in online tutorials
- Four checkpoints or tasks throughout course
80% attendance at weekly online tutorials, participation in online discussions and satisfactory completion of all four checkpoint tasks are mandatory requirements of this course.

- Non-language trained teachers who want to develop their Language methodology skills

Delivery style
This course is delivered online in 14 weekly 3 hour sessions - 2 hours self-paced modules and 1 hr synchronous tutorial via Zoom. Synchronous tutorials will be held each Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. Zoom link will be sent to registered participants.
- Introduction to the Language Teaching Approval Program (compulsory) will be held on 30 July 2024
- Units 1 to 8 will start on 6 August 2024 and finish 24 September 2024
- Units 9 to 14 will start on 15 October 2024 and finish on 19 November 2024
Please note classes will not be held during school holidays.
