Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The aims of this course are to consolidate and develop your knowledge, and speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, further to those gained in previous courses. More complex grammatical structures will be introduced in order to improve all essential language skills.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • use appropriate vocabulary in the context of the topics ‘leisure time’ and 'learning activities'
  • listen to and understand a complex radio feature about gaming, and make comments
  • write a fictional adventure story
  • speak about learning techniques and memory
  • use the covered grammar topics (conjunctions/modal verbs) more confidently and correctly.


Leisure time activities – How to have fun in your spare time!

  • Radio feature on leisure time – gives the best options on how to spend your free time (grammar: adjectives – comparatives and superlatives)
  • Media interview with an expert on gaming: understanding and describing it
  • ‘Adventure in paradise’ – writing an adventure story (grammar: concessive and consecutive connectors/conjunctions)
  • Movie review: reading, understanding and writing your own

Lifelong learning

  • Learning opportunities (grammar: subordinate sentences – infinitive with and without zu)
  • Writing a statement
  • Listening and understanding a German song (modal verbs: tense and meaning)
  • Learning and memorising: learning techniques and brainteasers
  • Documentary about highly gifted and talented children

Intended audience

Suitable for B1 level students, those who have completed all levels of German up to 501, or who have completed 420 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive sessions where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.

Prescribed text

Aspekte Neu B1 Plus: Lehr- und Arbeitsbuch mit Audio-CD, Teil 1, by G. Eikenbusch et al, ISBN 9783126050180.

Based on Chapters 4 and 5 of the prescribed text. The text is used for activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice.
