Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)


The aim of this course is to consolidate and improve knowledge through the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, further to those gained in previous courses. More complex grammatical structures will be introduced in order to improve all essential language skills.


Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Prepare an event brochure.
  2. Discuss Germany’s recent history.
  3. Speak about and comment on historical events of the 20th century.
  4. Discuss the advantages of riding bicycles versus driving cars.
  5. Express opinions about environmental issues.
  6. Make statements about how to save energy.
  7. Make predictions about the future and what life might be like 50 years from now.


This course aims to improve students' ability to communicate on a variety of subjects related to the topic of Learning. These include:

  • Different types of learners and their study spaces
  • Lifelong learning: courses at adult education centres
  • Digital learning: opportunities & challenges
  • Exam stress & preparation
  • Studying, memorising & applying: memory training, vocabulary learning strategies, learning challenges

Students will extend their vocabulary on those topics as well as acquire new grammar structures in activities, discussions and role-plays. They will gain confidence in expressing their own views and ideas and discuss and comment on social problems and conflicts related to the above mentioned topics. Additional material such as literary texts, magazine or newspaper articles and audio or audiovisual material will be utilised according to the ability of the class.

Intended Audience

Suitable for B1 level students, those who have completed all levels of German up to 402 or 345 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery Style

The course is delivered as a series of interactive sessions where active participation is encouraged. Each session is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.

Based on Unit 5 of the above text and its corresponding exercise chapter. The text is used for activities and forms the basis for consolidation and practice. Additional study material will be provided throughout the course.

Note: Students will be required to purchase this exact version – Volume 1 of the textbook (Chapters 1-5 including exercise material).
