Art is widely recognised as an important tool for helping people feel better. Using a mix of simple art activities, writing and discussion, you’ll experience a unique way to explore, restore and transform your life in this introductory art therapy course. Be enriched as you experiment with paint, pastels and clay in a playful and supportive environment. Learn to navigate your life with art from your heart.

Outcomes

By the end of this art therapy course, participants will:

  • Understand basic art therapy theory.
  • Gain skills and direct hands-on experience in manipulating simple art materials and using these in guided activities as a vehicle to explore and reflect on their life.
  • Have an understanding of the value and benefit of using art making as a tool to explore, monitor and express thoughts and feelings.

Content

This art therapy course covers the following topics:

  • What is art for? What are the links between making art and feeling better?
  • Brief overview of art therapy, its process and benefits.
  • Letting out your Inner Picasso: Art play and spontaneous image making.
  • Cut and Paste: Using collage as a means of raising self-awareness.
  • Scribble and Draw: Using pastels to document and transform a recent stressful situation.
  • Creative exploration to clarify the issue, facilitate change and support the growth of new ideas and potential solutions.
  • Discover painting for pleasure, not perfection.
  • Guided painting exercises.
  • Guided relaxation. Explore the benefits of working with clay.

Please Note: Students should bring an old shirt (to protect clothing from paint) and a journal or similar for personal writing.

Intended Audience

No art experience is necessary. Please note that this is an experiential course. It aims to give you direct, hands-on experience of the ways art-making can be used to reflect on your own life. Some basic art therapy theory will be offered, but the course is not art therapy training.
