Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This course builds upon the previous three terms (301 – 303) of work and prepares you for the fourth year Arabic program.


By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • initiate and sustain conversations with learners of Arabic-as-a-foreign-language speakers, and paraphrase (as necessary) to make yourself understood
  • read simple authentic texts on familiar topics connected to daily life
  • recognise a general understanding of aspects of Arabic culture connected to everyday life
  • recognise culturally important expressions
  • write, in simple sentences, notes and short essays on familiar topics connected to daily life.


This course covers the following topics:

  • the extended family
  • around the house
  • forming questions
  • forming negative questions and sentences
  • personal pronouns.

Intended audience

Suitable for B1 level students, those who have completed all levels of Arabic up to 303 or who have completed 270 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.


Resources will be provided to cover all topics.

Please note

Selected courses that teach spoken language may include use of language immersion (course instruction in the selected language) as part of the training strategy.


Language courses are offered in four terms each year during January, April, July and October.
