David Stratton
David Stratton was the director of the Sydney Film Festival from 1966-1983. He contributes film reviews to The Australian, and is the author of two books on Australian cinema: The Last New Wave and The Avocado Plantation. From 1981-2004 he presented films on SBS Television and was, with Margaret Pomeranz, co-host of The Movie Show from 1986-2004. In July 2004, Margaret and David moved to ABC television with their show, At The Movies, which aired until 2014.

This film course led by David Stratton will focus on the life of Gregory Peck. As an actor who radiated wholesome decency, yet when called upon to display darker, more troubled characteristics, Gregory Peck effortlessly rose to the occasion. As a result, he was as much at home playing everyone’s idea of a wonderful father (The Yearling, To Kill a Mockingbird) as he was playing a sadistic outlaw (Duel in the Sun), an obsessed Captain Ahab (Moby Dick), or an exhausted and mentally shattered airman (Twelve O’clock High). He was equally at home in Westerns (Yellow Sky, The Gunfighter, The Bravados) and contemporary romantic comedies (Roman Holiday, Designing Woman), and he even starred in a famous horror movie (The Omen).

We’ll examine the life and career of this consummate actor and screen three of his films in full, as well as excerpts from many others.
