Aims

In this practical workshop, you will learn the basics of UX and how to apply UX and design-led approaches to specific problems and scenarios. You will gain experience working individually and collaboratively, using approaches such as brainstorming and user testing, to create tailored solutions to user problems.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • conceptualise fundamental UX design approaches
  • communicate and demonstrate the benefits of user-led design strategies
  • better identify your target audience and develop solutions tailored to their needs and goals
  • apply relevant UX tools and approaches in your own work contexts or practice to solve problems and enhance the user experience.

Content

What is UX design?

A high-level conceptual look at UX design and why it’s important. This includes an overview of commonly used tools and proven UX design frameworks and approaches, including the Double-Diamond process and Lean UX.

Design activities

Defining the design problem

We will look at the design challenge and define the problem using different problem statement templates. We will review the outcomes of user research and interviews to assist in understanding the context of this task.

Defining the target audience and personas

We will identify the criteria used to define a target audience and user interview techniques by undertaking interviews. Based on the outcomes of the interviews, we will create user personas and review the outcomes.

Creating a user journey map

We will select a relevant scenario to apply to our user persona and complete a user journey map using the tool Miro, or sticky notes and paper (for in-person delivery).

Completing a design brief

We will create a clear and succinct design brief which helps to communicate the purpose, problem and scope of the design project.

Brainstorming solutions and user testing options

We will explore potential solutions that address the problem and ways in which we can do rapid prototyping and testing of the solutions.
