Martin has had a rich and varied career in education and the arts. He started as a high school Science, Drama and English teacher before pursuing live theatre. He then moved into feature films as an art director, most notably on Strictly Ballroom.
He was Co-Producer on William Shakespeare’s Romeo+Juliet and the lead producer of Moulin Rouge. This film won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy of 2001 and was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture. Martin won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Producer of the Year in 2001 from the Producers’ Guild of America.
In 2011, Martin was approached to join AFTRS, the National Film School. He was ultimately appointed Director of Award Courses, with responsibility for all accredited courses. He was responsible for developing 11 new Masters degrees, a new Bachelor of Arts degree, 8 new Graduate Certificates, 3 new Advanced Diplomas, 5 new Diplomas and numerous short courses. He also established and ran the Applied Industry Research unit at AFTRS which explored virtual reality, binaural audio, biometric feedback. Martin has a passionate interest in the intersection of technology and learning. In an increasingly complex, intermediated world, this exploration is more important than ever.
