Thai Course 101 (Level 1): Beginners

Thai. Learn Thai with us.

Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This beginner’s Thai course focuses on basic communication used in everyday life. It will introduce you to Thailand and its culture. You will learn how to greet people, order food at restaurants and ask for directions. You’ll also be introduced to various grammatical structures.

Standard spoken Thai is used throughout this beginner course and you will learn to socialise at a basic level, as a foreigner in Thailand would.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • communicate very simple exchanges used in everyday life situations, including greeting and meeting people, buying items, ordering food etc.
  • ask simple questions with question words in Thai, eg What? Where? Who? How much? How many?
  • seek feedback with simple question particles, such as mai, chai mai, dai mai and mii mai
  • place an order at a cafe or restaurant using basic food and drinks terms.

This course covers the following topics:

  • background of Thailand, the Thai culture and its language
  • basic greetings and apologies, showing respect through body language and choice of pronouns
  • talking about who you are and where you come from, basic question and answer forms
  • talking about possessions, working with numbers and currency, asking for telephone numbers and addresses
  • shopping and bargaining, asking how much and how many, fruit terms, identifying things, sizes and colour

What others say.

  • Excellent juxtaposition of teaching Thai language and culture.

  • I was able to put into practice the course content I learnt, which was terrific.

  • I found the course most enjoyable. It was a fun learning experience and I will take the next level course in Thai.

  • Thai 101 is one of the most innovative and learner-centred language programs that I have attended. The tutor is extremely well-prepared and thorough with the pedagogy and its application. The class was most interactive and supportive. I have enrolled for Thai 102 and have no hesitation in recommending this course. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • A well structured course which had me speaking basic Thai from the first lesson.
