Level C1/C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

Aims

This course aims to consolidate, develop and expand on knowledge previously gained at all levels of Italian instruction, and to work towards developing fluency in the use of Italian language (at C1 moving markedly towards C2 level).

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • understand ideas and concepts expressed in Italian across a spectrum of settings when expressed in an explicit way, moving towards a nuanced understanding
  • participate in active guided and unguided discussion on various topics including current affairs
  • express opinions about aspects of Italian culture such as chosen pieces of film, literature and Italian music.

Content

This course provides focal points for engagement and discussion which include:

  • Italian culture (small extracts of film, specially selected literature and music)
  • Italian society
  • current affairs topics.

Short film clips, less difficult passages from literature, newspaper or magazine stories, blogs and so on, provide the opportunity for engagement in a highly interactive environment. These will be explained, repeated and examined to aid in comprehension with guided discussion in Italian.

Preparation of written work and its presentation is also part of your expected participation. Grammar will be revised as needed.

Intended Audience

Suitable for continuing C1/C2 level students, those who have completed all levels of Italian up to 503 or those who have completed 470 hours of recent face-to-face tuition.

Prior to attending this course, you should be able to:

  • comprehend concepts and ideas expressed entirely in Italian through media such as magazines, television and films (this may be with difficulty but moving towards ease of understanding)
  • participate in discussion held entirely in Italian, although on occasion, this may be with effort.

Delivery Style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where you will be encouraged to use the language via: contribution to class engagement activities, group work and pair work. You will also be exposed to the language through guided film, music, literature and audio work, followed by discussion and practise. Each session focuses on one or more discussion topics and is conducted in a friendly and relaxed classroom setting.
