Chinese Mandarin Course 3031: Standard (HSK Level 5 Preparation 1)

Offered in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney. The Confucius Institute is based on a partnership with Fudan University, in collaboration with the Office of The Chinese Language Council International in China (Hanban). It is managed by the the Office of Global Engagement. The first to be established in New South Wales, the Institute has attracted thousands of people to its popular Chinese language and culture programs.

Designed for enthusiastic learners, this course will introduce you to short essays involving comparatively abstract ideas, critical thinking and self-reflection. The content explores people’s socio-cultural beliefs in relation to life and nature, expands learner’s Chinese cultural or historical stories and their efforts in pursuing physical and psychological well-being.

At the advanced level, equivalence between the Proficiency Test, namely Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (HSK, Chinese: 汉语水平考试), is favorably considered. Learning materials will integrate language content and HSK testing formats so you are aware of your proficiency. You are also encouraged and should be confident in taking the HSK Level 5 exam after completing Advanced Level 3 or Level 4.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • continue to develop your language skills at an advanced level through various class activities
  • train you to think and express abstract ideas and be aware of the general philosophy of life
  • help prepare you for the HSK Level 5 language proficiency test.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • discuss around 361 vocabulary items and recognise around 200 characters
  • talk about relationships between couples
  • talk about relationships between yourself and your parents
  • describe the future
  • introduce a historically famous person
  • introduce some traditional Chinese customs
  • talk about one’s experience of celebrating a festival
  • tell a historical Chinese story
  • express your opinion on the conservation of history
  • introduce several Chinese idioms and the story behind them
  • exchange opinions on an idiomatic story
  • use several Chinese idioms in oral expressions
  • share your opinion on a social phenomenon
  • talk about the benefits of something since its development
  • exchange opinions on technological developments
  • gain insights into Chinese people’s perspectives on family, success and societal development.

Content

Covers《HSK标准教程5上》Unit 1 to Unit 4 (1). It runs for two hours per week over ten weeks, making a total of 20 hours of instruction time. Schedule and content coverage are as follows (subject to change):

Delivery style

Delivered as a series of interactive workshops where active participation is encouraged.

Prerequisites

To enrol, you should have gathered one of the following learning experiences:

  • completed Chinese Mandarin Course 3022: Standard (HSK Level 4 Preparation 4)
  • recognise about 950 characters and know about 1200 vocabulary words and collocations associated with these characters
  • studied and had face-to-face instruction for around 390 to 420 hours.

The above criteria serve as a rough guide. Second language development varies largely at this stage, so you are welcome to discuss your learning history and language proficiency with teachers from the Confucius Institute to identify a suitable class to attend.

The prescribed textbooks are available through the University of Sydney’s Confucius Institute.

Responsibility of the learner

  • You should spend time outside the classroom to review materials which have been taught. An average of two hours per week practicing characters, vocabulary and grammar is expected in order to obtain satisfactory learning outcomes.
  • From time to time your teacher may assign homework. You should complete this as diligently as possible to enhance learning results.
  • Depending on the time available, your teacher may conduct a small assessment in the last week. You should consider this as an opportunity for review.
