Some think we are witnessing the emergence of a crisis within, if not the death of, democracy itself. What are the philosophical bases of democracy? What are the major threats to it in the 21st century? What is the meaning and function of the emerging discourse of “post-truth”? And why does it matter? These questions are important ones and require cogent answers. We shall answer them, and other questions – in this fully illustrated day course.

Aims

  1. To critically explore the philosophical bases of democracy
  2. To critically explore the major threats to it in the 21st century
  3. To critically explore meaning and function of the emerging discourse of “post-truth” in 21st century mass media and communication
  4. To critically explore the future of democracy and the “democracy to come”.

Outcomes

At the completion of this philosophy course students should have:

  1. an understanding of the western philosophical bases of democracy
  2. an understanding of the major threats to it in the 21st century
  3. an understanding of the meaning and function of the emerging discourse of "post-truth"
  4. an understanding of the future of democracy and the “democracy to come”.
