Offered in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sydney. The Confucius Institute is based on a partnership with Fudan University, in collaboration with the Office of The Chinese Language Council International in China (Hanban). It is managed by the the Office of Global Engagement. The first to be established in New South Wales, the Institute has attracted thousands of people to its popular Chinese language and culture programs.

Course Content

This Chinese course combined with Chinese (Mandarin) Course 1032: Standard covers the following topics:

  • Talking about the weather.
  • Dining.
  • Asking directions.
  • Birthday party.
  • Seeing a doctor.
  • Grammar and structures.
  • Verb 来 (lái).
  • Dynamic particle 过 (guo).
  • Preposition 对 (duì).
  • Comparative sentences with 比 (bǐ) and 没(有) (méi{yǒu}).
  • 那么 (nàme) indicating degree.
  • Adverb 又 (yòu, again), adj/ v + 是 (shì) + adj / v, + 可是/但是… (kěshì/dànshì…), 一 …也/都…不/没… (yì...yě/dōu...bù/méi).
  • Adverb 多/少 (duō/shǎo) + v, 刚 (gāng) vs 刚才 (gāngcái), 到 (dào) + place + 去 (qù) + action, 一…就… (yī...jiù..., as soon as...then...), 呢 (ne) indicating an action in progress.
  • Sentences with 是…的 (shì...de), 起来 (qi lai) indicating the beginning of an action.
  • 越来越… (yuè lái yuè...), 再说 (zàishuō).
  • Resultative complements.
  • Reduplication of verbs and adjectives.
  • Direction and location words.
  • Verbal phrases and subject-predicate phrases used as attributives.
  • Time duration and complimentary expressions.

This Chinese course covers Integrated Chinese Level 1, Part 2, Lessons 1 to 2/3 and is taught over 2 hours per week in one session. The content of this course and Chinese (Mandarin) Course 1032: Standard is also available over four hours per week in two sessions by completing Chinese (Mandarin) Course 103: Intensive.

Prescribed Text

Both simplified and traditional character versions of the textbook and the two workbooks are available, however the simplified versions will be taught in the classroom. Students can also opt for the electronic versions of the Chinese course materials.

The Textbook is required for this course, while the Workbook and Character Workbook are recommended, but optional.

In addition to purchasing course materials online, students may also be able to source textbooks from our preferred textbook suppliers.

Prescribed textbooks should only be purchased after confirmation is received from us that the course will proceed. This usually occurs up to 5 days prior to class commencement.
